What is FIRE? Not wealth, a threshold
FIRE is not "getting very rich." It is the threshold where the income your machine produces covers your expenses. And that threshold sits in a different place than most people think.
#The wrong target feels unreachable
Say "FIRE" and people think "become a millionaire." This wrong frame makes the goal look unreachable and discourages most people before they even start.
FIRE is not wealth. It is a threshold: the moment the income your investment machine produces begins to cover your expenses.
#FI and RE: two separate things
FIRE is really two parts, and they get conflated:
What matters is FI: the freedom to choose. RE is not a requirement, it is an option that FI gives you. This distinction makes the goal both more reachable and more meaningful.
#What sets the threshold: your spending
Here is the truth most people miss. What sets the FIRE threshold is not your income, it is your spending.
Why? Because what the machine has to cover is your outgoings. Someone who spends little can become free earlier than someone who earns a lot but spends a lot.
#FIRE is a spectrum
FIRE is not "all or nothing." It is a spectrum:
- If your machine covers part of your outgoings, you gain that much job security and freedom to choose.
- When it covers all of them, you are at full FI.
- If it produces more, you can grow your spending or increase your safety margin.
So FIRE is not a distant summit but a slope you climb from the first step. Every unit of currency you save brings you closer to the threshold.
